Smart Choices:  The TREGOE Model of Decision Making (Mr. Scollan)

Students will gain a working knowledge of the TREGOE Model, used in business and industry worldwide. Students will learn the step-by-step process to developing problem-solving and decision-making skills. After mastering the process, students will apply the process to real-life situations in their lives, their school or within the community.

 

Korean and Vietnam War (Mr. Blazure)

 

This course will focus on the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Students will learn about the generals of each war, the locations of them, the causes and effects, and how they impacted the rest of the world.  The students will see different documentaries relating to these wars and will complete projects using Microsoft Office.  They will also read different letters and poems that were written during these times of war.

 

Advanced Art: 3-Dimensional Design (Mrs. Winchatz)

Mythological animals, dragons, gargoyles, and unicorns are just some of the imaginary creatures that will be created in 3-dimensional art class.  Using a variety of media including clay, pariscraft, wire, cardboard, and papier mache, students will also have the opportunity to create action figures, heroes, legends, and portraits.  Assemblages will be constructed using recyclable materials in an effort to be earth friendly.  The elements and principles of design will be applied to each project.  Artwork will be inspired by various styles and techniques of prominent artist and craftsmen.

 

 

World Cultures (Mr. Moore)

This course would explore the lifestyles, customs, foods, traditions, and core beliefs of people of several countries whose roles on the world stage is rising in importance in the 21st century globalizations.  Among these would be China, Russia and India.  Students would become familiar with the customs and norms associated with each group of people, to be better prepared to interact appropriately in their future business or travel experience.  The goal would be for students to come away from the course with a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, peoples of the world, as well as how their lives are significantly different and/or similar to our own in the U.S.

 

Celebrate the Invention of Flight (Mr. Bierly)

During this course students will build and fly their own hot air balloon.  Through this process students will gain an understanding of flight and discover the secrets behind the science.  Students will explore the early years of ballooning and man’s necessity to fly.  As a culminating project, students will compete to lift as much mass as possible with their balloon.  Winners will be awarded the Alexandria Middle School Ballooning Certificate of Excellence.

 

Measurement Application (Mrs. Yonney)

This course will teach students the real-life application to standard and metric measurement.  Students will be able to convert units of measurement in standard and metric form.  The students will explore measurement both visually and physically.  The students will choose a culminating activity to demonstrate what they learned.  The first choice would be designing a map of the school building, which could, in turn be used for new students, faculty etc.   The second choice would be to design an original house or building. 

 

International Games/Sports (Ms. Harrigan / Mr. Galante)

This class will teach students about different cultures and the activities in which they participate.  The focus will be on cross curricular learning, instruction in both individual and dual sports, skill development, game play, and video assessment.  The purpose of the course is to educate students about worldwide games/sports/activities and to expose them to various cultures and their practices.
